A MUM received more than just crumbs for her 50th birthday after her daughter-in-law gave her a celebration to remember.

The face of Sandra Whitfield, a mum-of-two, from Tavlin Avenue, Dallam, was transformed into the world’s largest toast mosaic using 9,852 slices of bread, as a birthday surprise from Laura Hadland, her daughter-in-law.

Sandra said: “It was certainly a massive shock. I love toast but it feels very strange seeing my face made out of it.

“I'm really overwhelmed because they have gone to so much effort. Laura really is the best daughter in law you could wish for.

“It’s been the best birthday present ever and I'm now a world record holder which I'd never have predicted.”

Laura roped in friends from the town to turn 600 loaves of bread into a picture of Sandra, her husband, Mike’s mum.

After six hours perfecting the image, the 32ft 8ins by 42ft 3ins present was complete.

The image, created at the Parr Hall on Sunday has set a new Guinness World Record title for the largest toast mosaic.

Laura, a museum curator, from Leicestershire, was helped to make the bizarre birthday card by friends from networking site Facebook as part of the HTC Wildfire Experience - a social network experience which brought together virtual friends in the real world to have fun and turn a dream into reality.

Laura’s idea was chosen from thousands of entries.
