CLEAR blue skies and scorching sun heralded Byley's 22nd rose fete on Saturday as the village's very own royals took their places.

Dazzling dresses and luxurious cloaks wowed the crowds who turned out a little earlier than usual in order to enjoy the fun and still make it home in time for England's first World Cup game.

Organiser Christine Hankey said: "It was a great day - numbers were possibly a bit down on previous years but we had a few different games going on this year and there was a lot of enjoyment and plenty of fun for everyone.

"It was lovely weather too because even though it was hot there was a nice breeze."

She added: "In all the years we have done the fete we've only held two inside so we've been very lucky with the weather in that length of time."

More than 30 children and toddlers took part in the procession along Moss Lane and paraded around the arena, at church field, before 10-year-old Rebecca Williams was crowned queen at 12.30pm.

Among traditional activities and events taking place throughout the day was Byley's first scarecrow competition, which Christine said was successful and something they hoped to include in future events.

After the afternoon's football, villagers made their way to the village hall for more fun and games, a buffet and disco.

Christine said: "We are grateful to everyone who helped and everyone who attended and made it a successful day - we'll be back next year."
