BUSINESSES in Culcheth say that they have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket after a series of power cuts this week.

The Harrow pub, Duck Egg Bluu restaurant, Crompton Opticians and Culcheth Library were among a number of businesses left in the dark on several occasions due to a faulty underground cable.

Despite United Utilities assurances that the problem has now been resolved some businesses are disappointed they won't receive any compensation - despite having to turn away customers with blackouts lasting for several hours at a time.

The lights went out in about 15 homes and businesses around the Warrington Road, Common Lane and Lodge Lane areas of the village several times between Friday and Saturday.

Paul Linderman, owner of the Duck Egg Bluu restaurant in the village centre said he was several thousands of pounds out of pocket: "It was horrendous, we couldn't open at all. On Saturday we had around 80 bookings, we got through about two thirds of them before the power went again. But I have been told we have no case for compensation, despite it going off without any warning."

Landlord of the Harrow public house Wayne Bibby said had got his own generator in case it happens again. He said: "It has been a nightmare, we couldn't open on Sunday as we had no faith in the power. It has had a devastating effect on business. We have probably lost thousands."

Culcheth Library was able to stay open because of the daylight and Crompton Opticians said it had been forced to cancel some appointments.

A spokesman for United Utilities said the problem was caused by an underground cable which had to be fully develop before it could be fixed.

He added: "We were on site on Tuesday and it should now be fixed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
