CREWE and Nantwich revived their hopes of a strong finish to the season with a 16-12 victory over Ormskirk.

Matt Farr's side avenged their earlier narrow loss, coming out on top in another close encounter, last Saturday.

Mistakes and a heavy pitch conspired to make things tough at the Vagrants.

Both sides were locked in a battle for supremacy early on with the hosts gradually gaining the upper hand.

Liam Sloyan ended an exciting burst through the centre to score what looked a superb try but an adjudged forward pass saw his effort chalked off.

But Crewe soon had their lead when Tom Maguire put over a penalty that sparked more fine play.

Farr drove from a rare start in the back row with the ball eventually recycled for Lee Gray to find a gap and crash over the line.

The visitors swiftly replied with a try themselves after a quickly taken penalty, reducing the deficit to 10-5 at the break.

Maguire drew first blood with another penalty in the second half but Ormskirk closed the gap to just a single point with a neat converted try.

Things remained scrappy and Maguire secured Crewe's victory with another penalty.

They stay fourth in SLC Division Two with Struggling Manchester Wanderers in town on Saturday, KO 2.30pm.
