PUPILS at St Peter's Primary School have been awarded for their sterling work in creating a heritage garden and outside classroom.

The garden on Birley Street is designed to help children learn about the area's history and heritage.

And the St Helens branch of the Groundwork Trust presented the Newton schoolchildren with certificates to reward their hard work.

Groundwork is a federation of trusts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, each working to improve the quality of the environment, the lives of people and the success of businesses in areas in need of investment and support.

The Local Heritage Initiative, a partnership between the Heritage Lottery Fund, Nationwide Building Society and the Countryside Agency, provided funding to the Friends of St Peter's School to pay for the heritage project and to produce an outdoor seating area comprising of six benches - each depicting a different element of the town's heritage.
