RESIDENTS in mid Cheshire need to speak up soon to make sure their voice is heard on a proposed merger for the county's police force.

Cheshire Police Authority, which ensures the constabulary is accountable to people in the county, has launched an online consultation to allow the public to air their views and concerns.

A draft proposal for the force's future must be on Home Secretary Charles Clarke's desk by the end of the month.

A final business plan is due by December 20 and the Home Secretary is set to make a decision early next year, with any new force coming into play in autumn 2008.

Peter Nurse, authority chairman, said: "Whatever the Government decides, we will continue to provide policing services through our Neighbourhood Policing Units (NPUs) and, while the changes may mean a period of uncertainty for our staff, it will be business as usual for our citizens."

If you would like to have your say about merger plans, then the questionnaire can be accessed on the police website, at www.cheshirepa.police.uk.
