HUNDREDS of people - young and old - came together on Sunday to mark the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Veterans from all three services walked alongside cadets from Warrington during a service of commemoration at Gulliver's in Westbrook on Sunday morning.

Taking the salute during the parade were Mayor and Mayoress Clrs Hans and Karen Mundry.

The parade included representatives from the RAF, Navy and Army - most of whom are aged in their 70s - leading members of the Air Training Corps, Sea Cadets of HMS Obdurant and the Cheshire Army Cadet Force.

The events were organised by the Burtonwood branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) and included other branches included Warrington, St Helens and Merseyside.

Among the marchers was former Mayor and current Penketh councillor George Warburton.

And at the other end of the spectrum was Paula McKenna from the Croft Air Training Corps. She was taking part in her final parade following her 20th birthday.

Brian Murphy, chairman of the branch, thanked those people that supported RAFA during the weekend, which also included fundraising in the town centre. The Wings Appeal commemorates the sacrifices of the younger men who withstood the German onslaught during the summer of 1940.

He said: "RAFA receives no public funding.

"The money you give to us during Wings Appeal allows us to continue providing welfare, care and support for the serving and ex-serving RAF personnel and their families."
