DELAYS could hit the M62 as up to three lanes are closed until the end of the year.
It's because from Monday, August 15, the road is being resurfaced between junction seven, Rainhill, and junction eight, Burtonwood.
A Highways Agency spokesperson said: "Three lanes of motorway will be maintained in each direction on weekdays between 9am and 5pm to minimise disruption to motorists.
"The road will be reduced to one lane at night and two lanes at weekends as maintenance crews work to ensure the work is completed by the end of 2005."
There will be a 50mph limit and some slip road closures will be needed.
The 2.7 mile stretch of road is the main freight route to Europe.
The high volume of HGVs is wearing it down - it carries 27m vehicles a year, one in eight of them a HGV.
The motorway Highways Agency project manager Paul Elliot said: "The work we are doing will ensure the motorway is in good condition well into the next decade."
