DAREDEVIL duo Joan and Sarah Walmsley chose a hair-raising start for their charity walk on Saturday - the top of Manchester Town Hall!

Stunned shoppers watched in amazement as the mother and daughter team sailed 80 feet down side by side from the roof of the city's civic centrepiece onto terra firma.

Would-be Congleton MP Mrs Walmsley, aged 53, and daughter Sarah, aged 26, raised £250 with their fantastic feat as part of a sponsored abseiling event.

The pair were among several hundred people to abseil from the town hall in aid of Wellbeing, a group of women's cancer charities.

Mrs Walmsley's mother Monica died of breast cancer last year, and both she and Sarah wanted to do something in her memory, despite never having abseiled before.

"I was a bit frightened at first, but it was very exhilarating, and I would do it again for a good cause, but not for pleasure!, '' said Mrs Walmsley.

Mrs Walmsley will contest the Congleton Parliamentary seat for the Liberal Democrats in the forthcoming General Election.
