Warrington Town 0

Ashton United 4

BASEMENT side Warrington Town crashed to another humiliating defeat on Tuesday - they are the only team without a win in both Unibond divisions.

To make matters worse, the two teams immediately above them in Division One, Matlock and Gretna, both won.

This was a miserable night for Town who had only two realistic shots on goal.

Mark Gordon's curling shot went agonisingly wide in first half injury time and Gideon Sutcliffe, one of the few star men in Town's side this season, produced a contender for 'You've Been Framed' when, after rounding the Ashton 'keeper, he slipped on the ball with an open goal in front of him.

The writing was on the wall for Warrington after only two minutes when Darren Twigg stunned the home side with the opening goal from John Brown's corner.

Jordan nearly made it two when he shot against the woodwork but Dave Sutton made amends when he fired home on 22 minutes.

Warrington were unfortunate to concede a third when, two minutes before the break, Twigg's shot cannoned off defender Chris Coulson and into the back of the net.

That goal, however, did not alter the complexion of the game. United had numerous opportunities to add to their tally and hit the post again.

Credit must go to Town for battling on in the second period. They played with a little more purpose and restricted the visitors to only one more goal.

It came 14 minutes from time when Brown's shot slid under goalkeeper Graham Bennett.

This defeat came on the back of a three-match unbeaten run in eight days. Talk of Town having turned the corner in that time has proved to be premature.

Town paraded two new signings on Tuesday - Paul Hession from Chadderton and Steve Pope from Winsford.

Manager Alan Lord has now used 34 players with only a quarter of the season gone.

Team: Bennett 4, Boden 4, Fleury 4 (Carruthers 17mins, 4), Gordon 4, Coulson 4, Sang 4, Cameron 4, Sutcliffe 4, Oldbury 4, Hession 4, Pope 4 (Kirkham 58mins, 4). Sub not used, Mallinson.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Warrington visit league leaders Lincoln.
