A WARRINGTON doctor has begun a fundraising campaign to build a mission for leprosy victims in Southern India.

Dr. Violet Gunamani says the victims of the disease are left destitute, without family support and shunned because of their disfigured appearance.

Hundreds live in a Bangalore leprosy colony on food hand-outs from the hospital and passers-by.

The doctor, a hospital registrar in Gynaecology, has begun a £120,000 campaign to provide a Christian mission where the sufferers can live and work the land in dignity.

She said: "It is my vision to provide a mission for 100 to 200 people and I need to raise about £120,000 for the building and land."

Anyone wishing to contribute is asked to make a cheque payable to the Yeshuas Christian Mission for Leprosy and send it to Dr. Gunamani at 49 Overdale Road, Sharston, Manchester, M22 4PY or alternatively make a credit to the Halifax Building Society Account No.00058782 - Roll No.2/34936269-3.
