A COMMUNITY centre which was ravaged by fire last November has risen from the ashes.

The Greenwood Centre, in Greenwood Crescent, Orford, is back in business after undergoing a major refurbishment.

And on Monday, the revamped centre hosted a family fun day to celebrate its official reopening.

Residents from the Grasmere and Greenwood estates turned out in force to enjoy a variety of entertainments including music, stalls and displays.

Anne Pritchard, secretary of the Grasmere and Greenwood Residents' Association, said that the event was a roaring success.

"It was a brilliant day, and we're very grateful to everyone who has helped to get the centre open again," she said.

"Penketh TV and Videos gave us a special deal on some equipment, and Provident donated a £200 music system, which the kids are over the moon about.

"Lots of community groups have already asked to be based at the centre and hopefully it will attract many more."

Although the centre is up and running again, it is still short of one or two important items.

The most urgent need is for fridges, and anyone wishing to donate one can contact Anne Pritchard on 838843 or centre manager Lesley Brewin on 442354.
