MOST people who live in Warrington would fully support Mr. Garrity's letter GUARDIAN (October 18) if they have any sort of wish to improve our lot in Warrington.

The Millennium bid is one way of helping the town to put its share of the mess right but it will make not a jot of difference to the state of the water quality higher up the river Mersey. The higher rivers that feed the Mersey are cleaning up but effluent still continues to be thrown/pumped in from sewage works, farms, housing estates and works, although this source has reduced due to many being shut down.

This mess will still flow past our "beautifully planned scheme." There are an awful lot of people who live further up these reaches and to change their attitude will need more than a Millennium bid. The River Mersey is still being abused on a grand scale and (dare I say it?) even in Warrington. MR. P. MORAN, British Canoe Union, 1 Mawdsley Avenue, Woolston.
