NEWTON got out of jail as they snatched victory with the last kick of the game.

Liverpool totally dominated the first 10 minutes, so much so that after an early penalty miss by Boulton they took the lead with a converted try.

This fired the Newton team into action and sensibly they moved the ball out wide away from the larger South Liverpool forwards to the backs.

This paid immediate dividends when Newton made good ground through winger Carden. The ball was moved along the line to Mitchell who, although held five metres from the line, sent Williams crashing over for his first try of the season.

Boulton failed with the first of his woeful attempts at a conversion.

Both forwards and backs were handling well and, after a move that went through several pairs of hands, centre Geary was there to take the final pass and score. Boulton failed with the conversion and the score read 10-7 in the homesters' favour.

Mitchell crossed for another unconverted try before half-time.

Great forward possession was used well by the backs, in particular Hardman and Geary who set up runs for Carden and Reid on the wings.

Newton's next try came with 20 minutes to go. Boland ducked under a tackle to score and soon after Boyers scored an excellent debut try in the corner.

Both went unconverted but Newton were in control.

Newton then pressed the self-destruct button. Marquis and Heaton stopped winning lineout ball, the team stopped tackling and a push over try, followed by a farcical error by Reid and Boulton, saw South Liverpool score three tries and get back in the game to lead with only minutes to go.

With seconds remaining on the clock, Newton faced a last attack at the visitors' line and were awarded a penalty 30 metres out. After previously poor attempts at goal by both Boulton and Reid everyone expected Newton to run the ball but they elected to kick for goal.

Boulton stepped up and put his earlier misery behind him to kick the goal and allow Newton to take the two points to help their league cause.

This week Newton tackle Birchfield away, kick-off 2.30pm, and they will be happy to capitalise on the good and forget the bad of this performance.
