RISLEY Prison was the target of protesters in the 'Free Deirdre Rachid' campaign.

A handful of people waving placards arrived at the Warrington Road prison on Monday.

Viewers have been gripped by Coronation Street fever after Deirdre was duped into a mortgage fraud by fiance Jon Lindsay.

Many viewers have pledged to mount 'Free Deirdre' campaigns. Even Prime Minister Tony Blair and Opposition leader William Hague joined the pleas for an early release for the character, after a judge's decision to jail her for 18-months created countrywide hysteria.

Risley Prison spokesman Les Mason said: "In real life, it is possible that a woman from Manchester may be sent to Risley, but I can assure you that Deirdre Rachid isn't here! I've even been upstairs to check!"
