DR Paul Williams, chairman and chief executive of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils, which operates Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington, has retired.
Paul first joined Daresbury's sister laboratory, Rutherford Appleton, in Oxfordshire, in l962, as team leader on a physics experiment, working up the career ladder to become director in l987.
For the past year, he has directed both Rutherford and Daresbury labs.
He holds a string of awards, including the CBE.
Paul has been succeeded by Dr Albert Westwood.
