Cameron King got a letter from Frenchman Jean Claude Gaudin last week.
In it, the mayor thanked five-year-old Cameron for apologising for the behaviour of some English football fans at the World Cup in France.
"He is quite sensitive about what other people think and said we must tell the person in charge in France that not all English people are like that," said Cameron's mum Catherine, of Spinney Avenue, Goostrey.
The Goostrey Primary School boy decided to write to the mayor the day after England's clashes on and off the field in Marseille.
"We talked about ways to help Cameron and he decided to send a letter to the mayor to explain not all English people behaved like that," said reception class teacher Lyndsey Saxton.
Last week Mr Gaudin wrote back, saying: "Hooliganism is not just an English problem."
The mayor added: "You have cared enough to write and apologise to me in the name of all the British people who feel responsible for the riots in June.
"This does you credit and I thank you in the name of all Marseille."
