COURAGEOUS youngster Louise Tyler has been recognised for her brave fight against cancer.

Louise, aged 10, is on the road to recovery after undergoing treatment for a rare form of Ewing's Sarcoma, cancer of the soft tissue.

Her battling spirit prompted her home tutor Barbara Cartwright to nominate Louise for a trophy from the new Biddulph Youth Award scheme.

The initiative is the brainchild of John Potts, from Thames Drive, Biddulph, and is aimed at recognising achievement among young people under the age of 18.

Louise is the first person to receive an award from the scheme, and was due to be presented with a trophy this week at her home in Thames Drive.

''Louise has shown great courage and determination,'' said Mr Potts.

''The impetus for the award scheme was that there should be greater recognition for young achievers such as Louise, who is an example to us all.''

The scheme is being sponsored by businesses including Matrix Health and Leisure Club, Britannia Building Society, Co-op foodmarket, the Nat West Bank and Somerfield supermarket.

Regular awards are due to be handed out to deserving local youngsters, and anyone who would like to nominate a young person from Biddulph is asked to write to Mr Potts at 52 Thames Drive.
