A WINSFORD mother and her four-year-old daughter cheated death by a matter of inches when a lorry overturned onto their car last week.

Joanne Rimmer, of Turnberry Close, Winsford, and her daughter Jasmine were travelling on the A562 Ditton flyover in Widnes when the freak accident happened.

A tipper truck carrying a load of Welsh stone keeled over and landed on their Vauxhall Corsa.

Amazed firefighters who attended the scene said that the pair only survived because their car was sandwiched between the cab and main body of the truck.

Jasmine was treated for a neck injury and Joanne, 27, for shock when they were taken to Whiston Hospital after the accident, which happened at 1.30pm on Tuesday, March 22.

The child's injuries were described as serious but not life threatening.

Police closed the road for a number of hours from the time of the accident as the lanes were strewn with stone, and a crane was brought in to remove the truck.

Two fire engines from Widnes attended the scene and gave first aid to the mother, daughter and lorry driver, from Shropshire, who received cuts to the wrist.

The lorry was travelling towards Speke when it overturned and is thought to have toppled more than 20 tonnes of stone onto the carriageway.
