HUNDREDS of workers at a Warrington factory could face an uncertain future following news of a possible takeover at Hazelwood foods.

Bosses at the Woolston factory announced that they had received an offer from Irish food company Greencore of £258 million to buy the food chain.

The workforce of nearly 800 staff at the Woolston factory specialise in producing ready-meals and the firm has 38 food manufacture sites across the UK and Europe.

Jonathan Grant-Nicholas, director of corporate affairs at Hazelwood foods said: "The board has recommended acceptance of the offer. It now relies on the approval of the shareholders from both companies.

"It will be confirmed in mid-December if the shareholders give it their blessing."

A reduction in profits at the firm was revealed in September. Profit before tax and one-off costs dropped from £21 million to £13.1 million.

Mr Grant-Nicholas said he couldn't speculate on the future of jobs at any of the 38 factories. "We can't make any comments about jobs in any of the factories. It is not for us to comment on their plans for the future of the company," he said.
