MANCHESTER Ship Canal Company received complaints from frustrated motorists who were caught up in traffic chaos after the Stockton Heath Swing Bridge became stuck for half an hour on Monday afternoon.

The company were alerted to the problem after pumphouse operators attempted to close the bridge after a barge had been allowed time to pass through which usually takes about 12 to 15 minutes. The bridge was opened at 1.37pm and eventually closed again at 2.18pm.

Motorists were diverted to alternative routes by traffic police, over Knutsford Road swing bridge, the high level bridge and Chester Road.

A spokesman for the Manchester Ship Canal Company said: "While we realise it can be very frustrating for motorists when this happens, it wasn't a major breakdown of the bridge and the operator was able to get it working again within half an hour."
