RELATIVES of 12 war victims whose names have recently been added to Crewe's memorial joined Sunday's Remembrance Service on the Square.

"Their presence made it a very emotive occasion. They were delighted that their loved ones had been recognised at last and we were happy to have been able to make that possible," said borough council spokesman David Owen.

The additional names were found after the authority launched an appeal prompted by one family's request for a soldier to be included.

"The council felt there might be more who were entitled to be remembered and honoured by the town and that proved to be the case," added Mr Owen.

A plaque with the new names has been added to the memorial.

Sunday's service, organised by the council, was conducted by the Rev Margaret Saville, mayor's chaplain.

Civic dignitaries were led by mayor and consort, Cllr Barbara Bickerton and her husband Colin.

Music was provided by the town's Salvation Army band and the Voices in Unison choir boosted the hymn singing.

British Legion members also paid their annual tribute to fallen comrades with their 'eleventh hour of the eleventh day' service on Saturday.

Ex-service and youth organisations were on parade and were joined by civic leaders.

The service at the war memorial was conducted by British Legion branch padre, the Rev Gordon Geddes.

"The numbers on parade were down on previous years. The reason was probably a combination of age, infirmity and the weather. But a large number of shoppers joined us for the service and it went very well," said spokesman Jim Davies.

"It is very encouraging that the revival of the eleventh day commemoration has become an established event and well supported," he added.

The parade was led by the South Cheshire Pipe Band and music for the service was provided by the Salvation Army band.

Next year the two services will combine as the eleventh day will fall on a Sunday.
