A PERMANENT tribute to a Warrington man who was brutally killed in a Samurai sword attack was unveiled this week.

During a simple ceremony at Gloucestershire County Council's Shire Hall reception, a plaque was unveiled which will forever pay tribute to Andrew Pennington.

Mr Pennington suffered horrific multiple stab wounds in the Samurai sword attack, which happened at MP Nigel Jones' surgery in Cheltenham in January last year.

He worked as an aide to the MP.

The plaque was unveiled by Dr John Cordwell, chairman of Gloucestershire County Council, and witnessed by Andrew's father Harold and sister Ruth.

It includes a direct quote from Mr Justice Toulson, the judge who presided over the murder trial.

It reads: "We see much of human evil and broken lives. We also see instances of amazing selflessness and courage. When it occurs it is often in people who do not see themselves at all special."

Ruth said: "This is a very proud day for our family. Andrew loved his life as a county councillor and since his death it has been very rewarding to discover the great respect and deep affection people had for him."

The Andrew Pennington Charitable Trust was also launched, which aims to provide education grants to youngsters in Gloucestershire who have been in the care of the local authority.
