SOUTH Warrington Lib Dem councillors have hit out at Warrington Borough Council's funding allocation for vital road repairs.

And they are angry that £200,000 was left over at the end of the year when hundreds of residents were told there was no money for essential works.

"On the south of the town when we ring in and ask for jobs to be done we are always told there is no money left in the budget," said leader of the opposition and Grappenhall and Thelwall Clr Barbara Mawer.

"People can see problems all over the place that need repairing and it is not clear to me how the priorities are made.

"It does seem that it was wrong that money was left over."

But chairman of environment John Joyce says that there was no underspend the money had been allotted but the programme got delayed and some of the finance had not yet gone through the books.

Officers have been told, he says, that they should not be telling people there is no money left in the budget.

"It is not for officers or any member of staff to say that we have run out of money," he said.

"It is an internal management problem."

There are also concerns about the general allocation of council funding and just £200,000 extra has been given to highway maintenance for this financial year.

Lymm Clr Ian Marks says the state of the roads in Lymm and other parts of the borough are horrendous and there is much that needs to be done.

"There is a lot of concern from many people that more money should be spent on these repairs rather than some of the grandiose schemes that are in progress," he said.

"The £200,000 extra that was allocated for highways repairs in this year's budget is simply not enough. The state of some of the roads in Lymm and other parts of the borough is horrendous."
