A CULCHETH man who is battling prostate cancer is setting off on a cycle ride to raise money for research into the killer disease.

John Mouatt, of Withington Avenue, was diagnosed in March last year and is currently in remission.

The engineering project services manager, who works for BNFL, is to ride from his office in Risley to the company's power station at Sellafield and back a total of 250 miles over demanding terrain.

Prostate cancer kills more than 700 men per month and John says he is keen to raise awareness as well as money.

"I've had treatment and am still having blood tests, but it's going well," said John.

"I want to make more people aware of the disease and help fund research."

John has been training with cycle rides of up to 40 miles at a time, as well as watching his diet.

"I'll have lots of pasta before the four-day trip," he said, "and plenty of energy drinks and bananas on the way.

"You do get tired, but you have to pace yourself."

The 56-year-old dad-of-two is urging people to sponsor his challenge. If you can help, call 836024.
