VOLUNTEERS pitched in to spruce up an Urmston park - and ensure it is in shape to host a major steam rally this weekend.

A combination of a funfair being based at Chassen Park and the recent wet weather had reduced the ground to a quagmire.

The state of the park was featured in Grotspots last week when a resident described it as a 'big ugly mud bath'. Debris left after a Bonfire Night display had also only recently been cleared.

And with the annual May Day steam rally due to take place, organisers of the event sprung into action. Trafford council provided 40 tons of soil which 30 volunteers laid down over the muddy ground.

Field organiser Geoff Johnson, of the May Day steam committee, praised the volunteers: "I would like to thank them for attending to the park in time for the rally - now everything is in place for the weekend."

There will not be an arena in the middle of the park for the event this year, though, as this section is still waterlogged.

The steam rally event takes place from Saturday, May 5, to to Monday, May 7, between 10am to 6pm each day. Attractions include 17 traction engines, vintage tractors, motorbikes and cars and a model steam railway.

Admission is £3 for adults and £1 for pensioners and children. Family tickets are £8.
