A TEENAGER is lucky to be alive according to firefighters after his Vauxhall Corsa ploughed into a concrete bridge support in Halton Lea and burst into flames.

The 18-year-old Runcorn man, who managed to pull himself free of the wreckage, was taken to Warrington General with serious head and leg injuries following the crash on Thursday, June 7.

The incident occurred outside car park six, near Cineworld, at 4.27pm, and two fire appliances from Runcorn attended the scene.

Leading firefighter Ken Sharrat this week told the World: The car burst into flames on impact but luckily the driver was able to get out of the vehicle.

Trapped

If he had been trapped he would have lost his life because of the toxic fumes and the extent of the fire.

In most accidents that we see involving cars with that amount of damage, drivers often have their legs trapped.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to remove the vehicle from the road.
