GOLBORNE'S world famous wrestling star Davey Boy Smith, better known as The British Bulldog, has died aged just 39 after collapsing while on holiday in Canada.

It is not clear whether Davey - who earned millions from his wrestling career and was on the verge of making a comeback - had a heart attack or choked to death.

The World Wrestling Federation legend was staying in British Columbia with his girlfriend Andrea Hart and her children when the tragedy occurred on Saturday. He was taken to hospital in the resort of Invermere where doctors pronounced him dead.

This is the latest in a long run of heartbreak for Davey's father Sid, aged 63, who lost his wife Joyce, aged 60, and his youngest daughter Tracey, aged 26, to cancer just three years ago.

The former miner said: "I thought the run of tragedy was over - he was so fit and strong. He never smoked and hardly drank." Andrea was said to be 'totally distraught' at Davey's death. Davey, who was famous for his 56-inch chest, 21-inch biceps and 29-inch neck, had not fought for two years, but was due to meet up with Vince McMahon of the World Wrestling Entertainment, formerly WWF, to discuss his comeback. WWE paid tribute on its website, stating: "Our thoughts, condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of 'British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith."

Sid is hoping that Davey will be buried at Golborne Catholic Church with his mother and sister.
