ABOUT one in ten patients attending casualty at Whiston Hospital is suffering from 'alcohol related' problems according to health bosses.
The news comes after a warning that binge drinkers are clogging up North West hospitals.
Hospital chiefs state that alcohol related illnesses are blocking beds and putting enormous strain on resources.
St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals issued a statement this The Star: "St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals Trust state there is an increase in the number of patients requiring treatment with alcohol related problems.
"Approximately 10% of all patients who attend the Accident and Emergency Department at Whiston Hospital have an alcohol related problem.
"Such problems lead to patients suffering accidents, falls and assaults. The trust is concerned in the increase in alcohol related problems, particularly in young women and the elderly and is now working closely with Primary Care Trust colleagues and Mersey Health Action Zone to address this."
