THE new Tesco Extra store will open on Monday following long talks between the council and the supermarket giant.

Despite concerns surrounding the condition of the roads in the area, the store - next door to the new state-of-the-art Halliwell Jones Stadium - will be opened by Warrington Wolves coach Paul Cullen and several players from the club.

Acting council chief executive Bernice Law says she is happy that the roads will be safe enough for the store to open as planned.

Talks were held between the two parties this week to ensure Tesco could open on schedule.

The 130,000sq ft store will open at 10am in a ceremony that will also be attended by staff from St Rocco's Hospice. The supermarket giant has agreed to donate £1,000 to the charity. Store manager Steve Humphries said: "Tesco has been working closely with the club over the past few years to help secure funding for the new stadium.

"We will continue to work with the Warrington Wolves in the future."
