SPEED limits have been introduced after 25 children were injured on the roads of Halton last year.
Halton Borough Council have implemented 20mph zones on an estimated 50 roads across the borough.
Chris Davies, MEP, said: "Introducing 20mph areas is a relatively cheap way for councils to improve road safety. The government's own transport department has found that the risk of a child being involved in an accident has been reduced by around two-thirds where 20mph zones have been installed."
A report, by the Institute for Public Policy Research, found Britain to have one of the worst records of child pedestrian safety.
Mr Davies added: "If you are driving off the main thoroughfares and in residential areas then 20mph speeds should be regarded as standard."
Recent research has shown that 20mph zones can reduce average speeds by about 10mph.
