IT was Guardian Cup third round weekend although the bad weather claimed two ties

There was a shock for former winners Vulcan who were dumped out by third division Mill Brow. The under-dogs made the last eight with a splendid 2-1 victory.

Lee Forber and Ian Mason scored the goals that saw Mill Brow through, despite Forber missing a penalty.

In Division One the leaders Rainhill Town suffered another blow, losing 3-2 to Moorfield in a tense affair at Widnes.

The win cuts the lead at the top to one point, Rainhill's grip is now under serious threat with Moorfield having three games in hand.

At the other end Avon Athletic beat Grappenhall Sports thanks to a Peter McCormack goal.

Halton Borough needed two penalties to ensure their share of the points against second division draw specialists Beechwood who had taken a two-goal lead courtesy of Alex Pill and Bobby Hughes.

Borough's first penalty had to be retaken, before Mike Adams restored Beechwood's two-goal advantage.

Halton pulled one back with a deflected effort deep in injury time and grabbed their equalising goal from a disputed spot kick as the game ended in controversial fashion.

Matthiola were unable to find the winning formula at General Chemicals losing 2-0, their seventh defeat of the season.

FC Trannie closed the gap at the top with a 4-2 win over struggling Village Social. The win leaves them trailing on goal difference with Mill Brow and Appleton Arms all on the same points. The Rylands cup quarter final for reserve division teams will feature Halebank.
