Northwich RUFC 1st XV 5

Widnes RUFC 1st XV 19

FOR 37 minutes Widnes struggled as the home side penned them in their own half.

From a Northwich scrum on the halfway line Lamb stood on the opposite side and as the ball emerged from the home side end he kicked the ball up field. From the ensuing chase skipper Ritchie Barraclough scooped the ball up and dived over for a bizarre try, Stu Hussey converted.

Widnes had chances to extend their lead early in the second half with penalties, one after a scintillating run by Paul O'Connor but Hussey was wide with both attempts.

Northwich gave the Wids a scare with a 57th minute try by the outstanding Mike Galeymore. But the class of the Widnes backs began to shine and two minutes later the home side scored. Dave Welsh fielded his own kick and passed to the supporting Riley who dummied his way over.

Widnes made the game safe in the 69th minute when Welsh put up a Gary Owen kick and when the home defence failed to deal with it he dropped on the ball over the line, Hussey added the extras. Widnes entertain Anselmians this week at Heath Road 2.15pm kick-off.
