YOUNGSTERS from different ethnic backgrounds are to get together to take part in a variety of sports from rugby to martial arts as part of a new scheme.

The community sport coaching programme, open to anyone aged between five and 16, is being introduced at Great Sankey Leisure Centre this weekend.

People from Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and other communities have all signed up to take part in the initiative, which aims to give youngsters the chance to make new friends and socialise, while also improving their health.

Clr Maureen Banner, executive board member for community and well-being at Warrington Borough Council, said: "This initiative is all about uniting different ethnic communities through sport, aimed primarily at children who will carry future responsibilities for integration.

"The bonding aspects of sport are being used to create lifelong, lasting friendships between children from all ethnic backgrounds.

"I believe the different communities, which help make Warrington special, will gain a great deal from the programme, not to mention some truly long lasting friendships."

The initiative has been put together by the Lord Rama Krishna Temple Kids and Sports Club and Great Sankey Leisure Centre.

It received £5,000 from the Awards For All fund.
