Ethel Mary Smith, who stayed at Sharston House nursing home, had suffered tragedy when her only son was killed in his twenties more than 50 years ago.

"She was a strong character and I think that's how she managed it," said Mary Brennon, matron at Sharston House.

Mrs Smith was born in Flintshire and educated at a convent in Wrexham.

When she left school she married Arthur, who was a butcher, and the couple moved to Hampshire where their son Raymond was born.

In the 1925 the family moved to Northwich and later built a butcher's shop and new house.

Sadly, their son died just one year after the Second World War ended and Mr and Mrs Smith moved to Bournemouth to open a new shop.

When the couple retired in the mid-60s they moved to Mellor Crescent, Knutsford, and stayed there for the rest of their time together.

Mr Smith died in 1978, but relatives said Mrs Smith continued to live an independent life until she was 96.

She moved to Sharston House seven years ago and spent her time reading and having visits from relatives.

"She got a telegram from the Queen when she was 100 and she was delighted," said Mrs Brennon.

Mrs Smith's funeral was held in St Cross Church and the Rev Ken Burghall conducted the service before she was buried at Knutsford Cemetery.

"She was a very together and strong lady," said Mrs Brennon. "But I suppose you have to be to live to 103."
