Prescot Cables 2 Kendal Town 1

CABLES moved up into fourth place in the league by completing a league double over the Lancashire side.

Early exchanges were even with both sides carving out chances in the opening quarter of an hour. Kendal came close on nine minutes with a neat move down the left, but the Cables back four remained very composed and cleared the danger.

Cables established the pattern for the rest of the game on 16 minutes when David Chadwick and Lee Cooper combined to create a chance following a free-kick. Cooper's shot was blocked and the ball fell to the feet of Chadwick, whose shot was parried to safety by the Kendal goalkeeper. Two minutes later Cables went close again when Steve Torpey shot over the bar.

Shortly afterwards, the game was held up for 11 minutes when the referee had to retire injured. The senior linesman took over and a spectator ran the line.

Lee Cooper was causing all sorts of problems to the Kendal defence and on 25 minutes with the linesman flagging furiously to indicate that he had been fouled the referee waved play on, presumably suggesting that Cables had the advantage. Although Cables won a throw-in right by the corner flag, it is tempting to conclude that the free-kick would have been the better option.

Four minutes later, Steve Torpey took a corner on the righthand side and the ball found the head of David Chadwick who gave Cables a 1-0 lead. This was the half-time score, although Cooper and Torpey did their best to double the lead in stoppage time when neat inter-play between the two ended with the ball going over the bar.

The second half belonged mostly to Cables, with O'Donnell having a shot saved after 48 minutes, Taylor shooting over the bar on 51 minutes, and Torpey shooting wide on 57 minutes and over on 58.

On 69 minutes Steve Torpey's persistence paid off. The ball fell to him just outside the penalty area and his right foot shot found the top corner of the net.

There was little more goalmouth action until the final minute when a corner taken from Kendal's left found its way into the net for a consolation goal.
