THE bomb squad was called to Hough Green last Wednesday when a boy found two grenades.
The 12-year-old found the devices outside the shops on Queens Avenue just before 10am.
He took them home to Canterbury Road and the police were called out, along with the bomb disposal squad, and nearby homes were evacuated.
The grenades turned out to be well-made but harmless imitations.
Insp Dave Price of Halton Police said: "They are not widely available but you can get hold of them.
"Whilst they are a tremendous inconvenience to us and the other emergency services, there is no actual offence in possessing them."
