BARNTON FC are just one game away from a place in Europe next season.

No, this isn't a wind up or a script from Roy of the Rovers. The Townfield Lane side could well be representing England in European competition in September if they beat a Cambridgeshire Premier League team next month.

Their chance of European glory comes after a tough round of matches in which Barnton have been representing the Mid Cheshire Football League in the FA National League System Cup.

Barnton, who were chosen by the Mid Cheshire FA because of their seven consecutive league titles, fought their way to the semi finals of the cup and on Saturday progressed through to the final with an excellent 2-1 win over South Western League.

Assistant manager Mark Warburton said: "We still can't believe that we're just one game from Europe and I have to praise the lads who really upped their game because we've suffered in the past three weeks.

"Maybe this competition has been a distraction, but we're in the final now."

Barnton beat South Western League with goals from Steve Davies and Neil Critchley and now must wait until May 8 for the final which will be contested at the home of Cambridge United.

The winners of the final will then travel to Slovenia in September as an England team, with the full backing of the FA, to take on Slovenia, Malta and Northern Ireland in the first round of the UEFA regions cup.

Before then Barnton have another trophy to contest when they face Poulton Vics in the final of the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup on Friday.
