PLANS to build houses on London Road in Leftwich have been met with strong opposition from residents who believe the development will ruin the scenery and wildlife in the area.

Vale Royal Borough Council received a planning application from Miller Homes late last month to build 22 townhouses and three first floor flats above garages at 289 to 291A on London Road.

The development will involve the demolition of The Elms, three existing buildings on the proposed site.

Access to the houses will be via a mini roundabout on London Road.

Residents are angry that five large trees will have to be chopped down to make way for the development.

Michael Higgins, 63, lives on Granville Road and his garden is adjacent to the area to be developed.

He said: "There are sparrows, blackbirds and other wildlife living in those trees. If those trees are chopped down it will spoil the view from my garden and the new buildings will also block out the sun.

"We received a letter two weeks ago but we have been given no actual plans of the development, I had to go to Wyvern House to see them."

A meeting was held last Wednesday between Miller homes and the residents of the homes that will be demolished.

Richard Ellison, head of planning and building control services at Vale Royal Borough Council, said: "The case officer will review the application. He will look at the local plan and consult with statutory bodies and the public and then make a report for me to look at.

"It is too early in the day to say what the outcome will be."
