YOUNGSTERS in Comberbach have new play areas and a teen shelter, after the first phase of the new recreation area was completed at a cost of £89,000.

Following almost three years of fundraising, after the original play equipment was removed in 1999 to make way for the building of a new village hall, the new area was opened last Wednesday.

A committee of people who live in the area consulted with all village organisations and residents about the facilities to be provided and the new facilities include play areas for toddlers and juniors, a teen shelter, and garden and picnic areas for older residents.

Steve Howard, chairman of the recreation committee, said: "I'm delighted with the facilities that have been made available.

"This is thanks to funding from the Countryside Agency, Living Spaces, WREN Landfill Tax Credits, Manchester Airport, Cheshire Police Authority, Cheshire Building Society and the work of landscape architect, Kathryn Berry."

The committee has received considerable support from the local community, raising £6,000 from local lottery, donations and fundraising events.

The environmental group, Groundwork (Macclesfield & Vale Royal), has been responsible for managing the project and County Landscape Development of Crewe undertook the work.

Steve added: "The whole community will now be able to enjoy the benefits of the new facilities."

The committee is now looking to raise further funding to complete phase two of the project, which will include a 'multi court' for use by individuals of all ages and abilities.
