DOG walkers are being asked to take care and clean up after their pets in Middlewich.

Middlewich councillors discussed the problem of dog fouling on the market field at the town council meeting on Monday night and will be looking into erecting signs either reminding dog walkers that it is an offfence to not clear up after their pets, or to ban them from the field completely.

Speaking at the meeting, Clr Simon McGrory said although it was not as bad as it used to be, the market field was 'becoming a cesspool of dog mess'.

He added that it was important to create awareness that the field is a children's play area and that their health is being putting at risk.

Town Mayor Alison Roylance-White suggested using signs that could go up prior to the town's folk and boat festival in June to discourage owners from leaving their pet's mess behind.

A number of councillors agreed that the problem needs to be tackled all year round.

Clr Jim Basford said: "There are dog bins on the field so there is no excuse really."
