I AM writing in response to the letter in last week's Knutsford Guardian from Mr Edward Pearce concerning the Royal George development.

May I say that I sympathise with Mr Pearce's point of view.

However, as a recently-elected councillor I would like to point out that there are town councillors who have always been opposed to certain aspects of this development.

They have made their opinions known at town council meetings and borough council meetings, both of which are accessible to the public and where support would have been appreciated.

The most recent representation to the borough council was on October 6 2003 in response to yet another set of amended plans for the Royal George being submitted.

At this meeting Councillor Holbrook represented the town council, Mrs Newton the public and I spoke on behalf of Knutsford Civic Society.

Mrs Newton and Mrs Douglas regularly attend town council meetings as members of the public.

As a further indication of our openness there is a list of ward councillors' names and phone numbers at the Information Office, where the public can also view planning applications during opening times.

The public are also able to attend council meetings and are given time to speak (should they wish) at the end of each meeting.

The council meets twice a month and a sign advertises this fact in the entrance to the Information Centre.

At town council meetings there are two co-opted members.

One represents the Freeholders Association; the other Knutsford Civic Society.

The Civic Society has attended meetings for the past 45 years and always have reports on planning matters and footpaths at their own meetings.

I hope the above information helps Mr Pearce in the future and gives him some indication as to how he can become involved himself.

Joining the Civic Society would be a good start.
