KNUTSFORD FC brought the curtain down on their Mid Cheshire League season by playing their part in a fine match and against derby opponents who now look destined to win the League.

This has been a season of transition for the Reds and mediocrity in results and performances have left them in a final position of mid-table.

The Witches were on the rampage on Saturday and seeking valuable points they set about Knutsford with determination and vigour.

Inspired

Roberts, on two occasions, Tomlinson and Hopley all had decent chances but the Knutsford goalkeeper, Dave Coleman, was inspired.

Club captain Stuart Bell was also quite superb and along with his younger defensive colleagues, Cocksedge and Potts, the home side were not about to buckle.

The visitor's first half superiority was rewarded with a goal on the half hour when Ryan Broadhead rose to score with a header.

Ten minutes later Knutsford drew level when Nigel Booth scored with a decisive header for his first goal for the club. On the stroke of half-time, Middlewich went ahead off a penalty.

After the interval, Knutsford played some superb football but following a poor defensive clearance on 52 minutes the ball arrived at the feet of Middlewich striker Joey Roberts who despatched it first time on the volley.

Then Knutsford took control and gave the home support plenty to cheer about in the last 20 minutes.

Fry, as ever, was at the heart of many Knutsford surges and when he headed a goal back on 55 minutes the hosts were back in the game.

Unfortunately it was not enough and following a spirited late onslaught they were left to rue what might have been.

* On Saturday the Altrincham League Cup semi-final between Broadheath Central and Timperley Taverners takes place at Manchester Road starting at 1.45pm and on Wednesday week the Showman's Guild hold their annual fixture at Knutsford FC.
