STUCK in a crashed car with smoke coming from the engine in the middle of the night, David Laycock needed help.

"I don't know where they came from but loads of people came to help," said David, 32, from Coronation Drive in Runcorn.

"They got me out and phoned an ambulance.

"I want to thank them because if it wasn't for them who knows what could have happened."

David's Renault Megane crashed on Clifton Road in the early hours of last Monday.

"I turned the wheel but my car didn't turn and it just went straight on.

"It hit the kerb and it flipped over, hit a tree and stopped," he said.

David's neighbour and passenger, Collette Webster, 20, suffered a broken wrist and David had whiplash.

He helped Collette out but tried to get back into the car.

He said: "I went back into the car to get my phone to tell the wife what happened but I got stuck and there was all smoke coming from the engine."

Around eight people showed up and helped him free.

Collette said: "I had dragged myself up the road and I was in that much pain from my back I thought I had broken it, I couldn't move.

"There was three girls helping me stand up and we had a cry together like girls do!

"I've never seen them before but they were really helpful, they were wonderful.

"We just want to say thank you to all the people who stopped to help," she said.
