A WORKER died after being crushed by a falling pallet at a DIY warehouse in Preston Brook, Runcorn.

John Rowland, 25, of Coronation House, Boston Avenue, opposite Runcorn Town Hall, suffered serious chest and abdominal injuries when a loaded wooden pallet toppled on to him.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before taking him to Warrington hospital where he later died.

The accident happened at the Tibbett & Britten depot at around 8.45pm on Wednesday, April 14.

A spokesman for Tibbett & Britten, said: "We can confirm that a tragic accident occurred at our Preston Brook site when a loaded pallet toppled on to a warehouseman, John Rowland, who sustained serious injuries.

"Mr Rowland was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of the morning.

"Our thoughts are with Mr Rowland's family at this terrible time. A full investigation started immediately."

Cheshire Police and Halton Borough Council are investigating the incident, and an inquest has been opened and adjourned.

A spokeswoman for Halton Council said: "We are taking the lead with the police on this matter and it is still under investigation."
