ONCE again Eccleston residents, together with Eccleston Parish Council and District Councillors, are leading a campaign to preserve our local heritage. Your article last week (Star, April 15) 'United in fight to save historic cottages', outlined the significance of Chapel Cottages, Millbrook Lane, Eccleston, and how their partial demolition would be an unnecessary deprivation of the cultural heritage of not only Eccleston, but of St Helens itself, in whose environs they marked a very early place of Methodist worship.

The small row of cottages are a prominent landmark in Eccleston, and any detraction from their setting would seriously affect the character of the area, and we feel that it would be an act of environmental vandalism to erect a modern property alongside them.

Eccleston residents are very proud of their heritage, having invested in the small but nonetheless nationally accredited local museum at the Smithy Heritage Centre, Kiln Lane. It would be a very sad day if this piece of Eccleston and St Helens heritage was to be destroyed.
