TOWNSFOLK are being urged to make their homes safer by taking up an offer of a free safety check by Merseyside Fire Service.

They are offering to fit free smoke alarms and give relevant advice to anyone, completely free of charge.

Frustrated that not enough people are having working smoke alarms in their homes, Station Commander at St Helens fire station Phil Lorenzo is keen to emphasise just how easy it is to get one fitted. He said: "Around 97 per cent of house fires are completely avoidable. Smoke alarms will not stop a fire but it will give an early warning.

"We are asking people to please respond to us and make an appointment.

"We are working full time to protect the community in offering this completely free of charge service and are working hard to get this message across but it will only work if the community respond to us.

"If they contact the fire station or ring the freephone number they will get a home safety check. What other service does that?"
