TWO cars were involved in a serious crash outside a primary school, just yards from speed cameras installed on a notorious accident black spot.

The incident happened outside Ditton Primary School in Liverpool Road, Widnes, shortly after 1pm on Wednesday, April 28.

A dark blue Renault Scenic and a red Fiat Punto collided, leaving the drivers, both Widnes men, needing hospital treatment.

Fire crews fought to free the trapped 23-year-old driver of the red Fiat who suffered serious facial and head injuries and was detained at Whiston hospital.

Paramedics took the 35-year-old driver of the dark blue Renault to Whiston hospital, he was suffering from shock, minor injuries and had stomach pains.

A shocked parent whose child attends Ditton Primary School, said: "This is a terrible road and by the look of things it was a pretty serious accident.

"I dread to think about the consequences if this had happened during morning rush hour or at home-time, with it being right outside the school."

Both vehicles were left badly damaged and driver-side airbags had been deployed.

Police closed Liverpool Road for more than an hour and a half, from the Lower House Lane junction and Ditchfield Road.

Sgt Yvonne Williams of Cheshire Police's Traffic Unit, said: "The speed cameras on Liverpool Road were installed over a year ago because of the high number of speed-related accidents."

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
