THE killer brain disease meningitis still threatens life in Halton, despite the discovery of a successful vaccine.
That's the warning from Widnes mum and campaigner Olga Wilde, of Meningitis Merseyside Support Group.
She welcomed comments in the World by Professor Syed about a vaccine reducing the number of C strain meningococcal meningitis cases.
"This is good news but may I warn the public that we must not become complacent," said Olga. "I wish to remind everyone that the meningococcal B strain is still around.
"We have to remain vigilant and be aware of the symptoms as the B strain is just as serious as the C strain. We are still seeing cases of B strain in the area."
There is no vaccine yet to tackle B strain.
Symptoms to watch out for include fever, headaches, drowsiness, vomiting, nausea, a stiff neck, delirious, dislike of bright lights and lack of energy.
Seek urgent medical advice if you suspect meningitis.
