COUNCILLORS have welcomed in principle plans for a Homebase Ltd store to be sited on land off Leicester Street - which could see up to 60 new jobs created.
The Northwich Area Working Group met on Wednesday to discuss and consider the proposal.
The site, adjacent to the Aldi foodstore and car park, is situated alongside the borough council depot off Leicester Street, close to the roundabout with Venables Road.
Planning permission was granted on the same site for a leisure and well-being centre for Boots in 2000, which has not yet gone ahead.
A spokesman for Homebase Ltd, said: "This could create between 45 and 60 jobs.
"Nothing is concrete but Homebase would probably take up its option if planning permission is granted."
Richard Ellison, head of planning services, said: "The Northwich Area Working Group welcomed the development in principle.
"It is in line with the Northwich Vision."
He added: "There was some discussion about the design of the frontage and some concerns about whether there was sufficient car parking spaces."
